Where to Base Yourself

St. Moritz has distinct areas, each with different trade-offs. Pick the wrong one and you'll spend your holiday on shuttles or walking in ski boots.

Editor's Take

Coming to St. Moritz expecting value or 'the best skiing in the Alps'. Neither is true. Accommodation is 2-3x more expensive than comparable Swiss resorts. The ski area is good but disjointed and not exceptional. You're paying for *St. Moritz* — the name, the glamour, the champagne bars, the people-watching, the historic palace hotels. If that appeals, great. If you just want excellent skiing at fair prices, go to Zermatt, Verbier, or Davos and save £2,000/week.

Our Top Picks

Badrutt's Palace Hotel Iconic Luxury

Badrutt's Palace Hotel

5★ Hotel · St. Moritz Dorf · 200m to Corviglia funicular
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The most famous hotel in the Alps. Opened 1896, hosted royalty and celebrities ever since. The building is spectacular, service is white-glove, the spa is world-class. You're paying for *history* and *exclusivity*. The brutal reality: rooms are dated (they haven't been renovated much since the 1980s), and at CHF 900+ per night, you get 28m² and furniture your grandmother would find old-fashioned. The half-board food is mediocre for this price. You're paying to say you stayed at Badrutt's, not for value.

Hotel Steffani Our Pick

Hotel Steffani

4★ Hotel · St. Moritz Dorf · 250m to Corviglia funicular
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The smart choice in St. Moritz. Right in the centre of Dorf, 5 minutes' walk to Corviglia funicular, good spa, excellent restaurant. The building has character (opened 1869) but has been renovated. It's where locals take their visiting parents — quality without the Palace insanity. The downsides: it's still expensive (£380-620/night for 4★), rooms facing the main street get traffic noise, and the spa gets busy at 5pm. But it's the best balance in town.

Hotel Hauser Best Value

Hotel Hauser

3★ Hotel · St. Moritz Bad · 150m to Signal cable car
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The 'affordable' option in St. Moritz (which is relative). You're in St. Moritz Bad, 2 minutes from Signal cable car. The hotel is modern-ish, clean, has a small spa. Breakfast is included. The catch: Bad is the 'unfashionable' part of St. Moritz — it's where budget tourists and families stay. You're 15 mins walk from Dorf (the glamorous centre) and the nightlife. The hotel itself is functional but soulless. And you're still paying £220-350/night for a 3★. But it's cheaper than Dorf.

Youth Hostel Stille Budget Pick

Youth Hostel Stille

Hostel · St. Moritz Bad · 400m to Signal cable car
{{#times stars}} {{/times}}

The *only* genuinely cheap option in St. Moritz. Dorm beds from £20/night, private rooms from £60 (shared bathrooms). It's a hostel — basic, clean, communal kitchen, mix of ski bums and budget travelers. You're 8 minutes' walk from Signal lift and the Bad train station. The building is dated and institutional (it's a youth hostel). But if you want to ski St. Moritz without selling a kidney, this is the only way. Book early — it fills up fast.

Booking Tips

1
Saves 50% in Davos/Lenzerheide

St. Moritz is insanely expensive — seriously consider alternatives

The skiing is good but not exceptional (350km Engadin area). You're paying for the *name* and the glamour. Davos has similar skiing for 50% less. Only come to St. Moritz if the experience matters to you.

2
30-40% in Bad vs Dorf

Stay in St. Moritz Bad to save 30-40%

Dorf is the glamorous centre with boutiques and palace hotels. Bad is the budget area 2km away. You'll save £150/night but miss the St. Moritz 'scene'. Depends what you value.

3
Beware

Self-cater to offset accommodation costs

Restaurant meals in St. Moritz average CHF 50+ per person. The Coop supermarket in Bad has all you need. If you're in an apartment or hostel with a kitchen, self-catering saves £300+/week.

4
Manage expectations

The ski area is good but overhyped

350km sounds big but it's spread across multiple unconnected areas (Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolezza). You need buses between them. The skiing itself is pleasant but not world-class. Adjust expectations.
